Mary Sanderson’s Spellbound Cocktail – A Red Hocus Pocus Halloween Drink

Jump to Recipe

If you’re putting together a Hocus Pocus night, Halloween party, or just want a fun spooky cocktail to make at home, this Mary Sanderson’s Spellbound Cocktail is such a good one to add to the lineup. It’s deep red, fruity, a little tart, and just dramatic enough to feel perfect for Halloween without being difficult to make.

And of course, Mary needs her sisters! If you’re making a full Sanderson Sisters cocktail spread, pair this with my Winifred Sanderson Cocktail and my Sarah Sanderson Hocus Pocus Cocktail. All three drinks together would be so much fun for a Hocus Pocus movie night or Halloween party.

A Red Halloween Cocktail Inspired by Mary Sanderson

For Mary’s drink, I wanted something bold and red that still tasted really good. Sometimes Halloween cocktails can look amazing but end up being overly sweet, so I kept this one balanced with cranberry juice, fresh lime juice, raspberry liqueur, and vanilla vodka.

The grenadine gives it that darker red color, while the raspberry liqueur adds a little richness and berry flavor. A splash of lemon-lime soda at the end lightens everything up and gives it just a little bit of fizz.

It’s sweet, tart, fruity, and honestly so easy to drink.

Perfect for a Hocus Pocus Halloween Party

This is one of those cocktails that instantly looks festive on a Halloween table. Serve it in coupe glasses or martini glasses with a dark sugar rim, and garnish it with a few raspberries or blackberries for an extra spooky touch.

If you’re hosting a bigger Halloween get-together, you could create an entire Hocus Pocus drink station with Mary’s Spellbound Cocktail, the Winifred Sanderson Cocktail, and the Sarah Sanderson Cocktail lined up together.

I also love serving this alongside some of my other Halloween drinks like my Hocus Pocus Purple Punch, Vampire’s Kiss Punch, or Midnight Blackberry Punch if you want a mix of individual cocktails and batched drinks.

What Does Mary Sanderson’s Cocktail Taste Like?

This cocktail has a really nice mix of berry and citrus flavors. The cranberry juice and lime keep it tart, while the vanilla vodka and raspberry liqueur add sweetness without making it taste too sugary.

The grenadine brings in another layer of fruity flavor and gives the drink that gorgeous red Halloween color.

If you like vodka cocktails that are fruity but still refreshing, you’ll probably love this one.

How to Make It Look Extra Spooky

Presentation is definitely part of the fun with Halloween cocktails. I like using a black or dark purple sugar rim because it really makes the red drink stand out.

You can also garnish with fresh raspberries, blackberries, or a small decorative Halloween cocktail pick.

For a party, set the glasses out near candles, mini pumpkins, and a few darker Halloween decorations. You really don’t need much — the bright red cocktail does most of the work.

Can I Make This Cocktail Ahead of Time?

You can mix the vanilla vodka, cranberry juice, raspberry liqueur, lime juice, and grenadine together a little ahead of time and keep it chilled.

I would wait to add the lemon-lime soda until right before serving so you don’t lose the bubbles.

For individual cocktails, though, it’s so quick to shake together that I usually make them fresh.

More Halloween Cocktails to Try

If you’re planning a full Halloween menu, there are so many fun drinks you can serve alongside this one. Try my Winifred Sanderson Cocktail and Sarah Sanderson Hocus Pocus Cocktail to complete the Sanderson Sisters trio.

You could also add my Hocus Pocus Purple Punch, Vampire’s Kiss Punch, or Haunted Harvest Mojito Punch if you need something batched for a crowd.

This Mary Sanderson cocktail is such an easy way to make Halloween night feel a little more fun, and it looks so pretty served with the other Hocus Pocus-inspired drinks.
